tokunseba

Introduction

What tokunseba is, what it changes, and what it refuses to change.

tokunseba is one process on 127.0.0.1 that sits in front of every AI coding tool on your machine. It reads each request on the way out, removes what the model has already been told without losing a byte of it, and can send the turn to whichever model actually needs to answer it, translating between provider protocols when they differ.

It is a command line tool. There is no account, no sign in, no plan, and no telemetry. The only outbound traffic is the request your tool was already making, to the provider your tool already chose.

pip install tokunseba
tokunseba init
tokunseba doctor

The problem it exists for

A coding agent reads a file, pastes it into the conversation, reads it again four turns later, runs the tests, lists a directory, and carries the entire transcript forward on every single call. The question you typed is a few hundred tokens. What surrounds it is tens of thousands, and most of that is text the model has already seen or never needed.

That waste is in the request, and it is the same waste in every tool you have installed. Fixing it in one place fixes it everywhere.

The other half of the weight is which model answers. A coding agent speaks one protocol to everything it talks to, so the strongest model you have configured handles looks good, commit it with exactly the same machinery as the turns that are genuinely hard.

What it will not do

Lose information

Everything it removes stays retrievable byte for byte with tokunseba expand. Nothing is summarised away without a handle pointing at the original.

Change an answer

If tokunseba hits a bug, your original request is forwarded exactly as your tool sent it and the failure is recorded. Optimising a request is never worth failing it.

Leave the machine

Binds loopback only. API keys are forwarded from your tool's own headers and never stored. No telemetry, no beacon, no phoning home.

Rewrite what you wrote

Only tool results are ever transformed. Your prompts, the assistant's replies and system instructions are forwarded exactly as they arrived, whatever is in them.

Where to go next

A note on numbers

Savings depend entirely on what you do. Long agentic sessions with heavy tool use are where the wins are; short chats save almost nothing.

Rather than promise a figure, tokunseba ships the measurement. Every session is assigned at random to a control arm or a treatment arm, both are recorded in the same ledger, and tokunseba stats --ab puts them side by side. A claim you can check against your own traffic is worth more than a number in a document.

For calibration, one realistic agentic turn measured end to end during development, made of a system prompt, a pytest run and a large file read, went from 9,629 tokens to 138. A different turn in the same session, with less that could be reduced, went from 45,715 bytes to 12,461. Your numbers will differ from both.
